A handbook for the neurodiverse community that will catch my readers attention, keep it and allow for an easy to follow read.
The Design Challenge
My challenge was to create a book that captured and maintained the attention of an audience who can often have 4 or 5 things going on in their head at a time with no way to focus on one at a time. For this it was important to focus on the users common symptoms, their superpowers and the way they read. To do this I focused on the following aspects and crafted them specifically for my user.
Typography
For the typography, I chose a big and bold yet soft typeface. Rubik, with its rounded nature and boldness, provides the perfect balance to aid the eyes in reading for long periods of time.
Book Size
The book is double the size of a standard one, a deliberate choice aimed at captivating the consumer's interest. Its aim was to be conspicuous in any setting, although a conventional-sized version was also produced.
Colours
The combination of red and white not only creates a powerful contrast but also draws attention effectively, ensuring maximum visibility.
Interactive Elements
Throughout the book, there are numerous interactive pages that encourage readers to reflect and write about what they've learned in each chapter, fostering deeper engagement and thought. Each spread features a dedicated notes section, providing space to jot down key insights. Writing things down enhances memory retention, making these sections invaluable for reinforcing learning.
Easy Navigation
Each article features a breadcrumb at the top left, reminding readers of its title and topic for easy reference. Additionally, a progress bar is included at the top to visually indicate how far along the article they are and the book as a whole. These elements are important for those who have trouble finishing tasks as it provides a clear indicator and benchmark.
